Foreign Economic Relations and Regional Economics
The XI Russian and German research conference on structural reforms to stimulate regional economic growth took place at the HSE Saint Petersburg.
The conference, which was held as part of an annual event hosted by the Consulate General of Federal Republic of Germany in Saint Petersburg, was organized by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce office and the HSE St. Petersburg.
Dr. Dirk Lau, Head of Locational and Regional Policy at Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, gave a presentation on ‘The Role of Foreign Economic Relations for Regional Development’, which was the central report of the conference plenary session.
A major part of his report was dedicated to Hamburg’s economy and foreign trade structure, and the connection between them.
Three research sections and one student section were also held during the conference. Participants of the section moderated by Alexander Khodachek, President of the HSE St. Petersburg, discussed the need to reduce administrative hurdles that prevent investment flows into Russia’s economy. Professor Khodachek highlighted the Leningrad Region’s successful policy in this area.
During the student section researchers presented a wide range of reports (the total number of reports was 18). Students chose different topics, including the features of transport and logistics infrastructure in Russia, human capital growth, and Russia’s economic outlook during political crisis.
