The Latest on Human Infants

Professor  Emmanuel Dupoux , Paris, Ecole Normale Supérieure ( ENS) will visit the HSE, Moscow  for a lecture entitled  ‘Quantitative modeling of early language acquisition’ on November, 15, 2013. He shared a few ideas with the HSE news service and spoke about his research interests.

— What’s the reason for your collaboration with the HSE? How did it start?

— Initially, I met Boris Gutkin, PhD, in Paris at the ENS who told me about the activities taking place in cognitive science at HSE. I am especially interested in the link with mathematics at HSE and by the possibility of developing new collaborations in the area of computational modeling of cognitive processes. 

— What are the current world trends in your field? How does your research reflect them?

— I am heading an ERC funded team interested in bringing together the areas of machine learning and psycholinguistics in order to model the early development of infants. You can find more information on the subject here:www.lscp.net/persons/dupoux/bootphon

— What are you going to present in your lecture in Moscow?

— I will present an overview of the early phases of language acquisition and focus on one area where a modeling approach is currently being conducted using tools of signal processing and automatic speech recognition: the unsupervised acquisition of phonetic categories.  We know that during the first year of life, before they are able to talk, infants construct a detailed representation of the phonemes of their native language and lose the ability to distinguish non-native phonemic contrasts (Werker & Tees, 1984). I will show that the only mechanism that has been proposed so far, unsupervised statistical clustering (Maye, Werker and Gerken, 2002), may not focus on the inventory of phonemes, but rather on contextual allophonic units that are smaller than the phoneme (Varadarajan, 2008).

Alternative algorithms will be presented using three sources of information: the statistical distribution of their contexts, the phonetic plausibility of the grouping, and the existence of lexical minimal pairs (Peperkamp et al., 2006; Martin et al, submitted).  Each of the three sources of information can be acquired without presupposing the others, but they need to be combined to arrive at good performance. I’m going to present some modeling results and experiments in human infants. 

— Are there any definite plans for further cooperation with Russian researchers after the initial lecture?

— Being the head of an interdisciplinary Master's programme in Cognitive Science in Paris, I am very interested in setting up international collaborations and graduate exchanges with Russia.

Boundaries between Developmental Language Disorders and Typical Performance Blurred in Young Children

A new study by researchers at the HSE Language and Brain Centre and the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences can change the current understanding of language acquisition in young children, revealing that the boundaries between typical performance and developmental disorders are not as clear-cut as previously believed. Having tested more than 100 Russian-speaking children between the ages of 4 and 7, the researchers discovered that some children diagnosed with developmental language disorders (DLD) performed on par with their peers who did not have speech and language diagnoses. The study has been published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.

Scientists Rank Foreign Languages by Their Benefit for the Brain

An international team of researchers, with the participation of scientists from the HSE Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience, studied how the choice of a foreign language affects human cognitive abilities. It turns out that languages greatly differing from one's native language stimulate cognitive function at the initial stage of their study, while those similar to the native language have a delayed effect and help the brain work more efficiently at a higher level of proficiency in a foreign language. The results of the study have been published in the journal Bilingualism: Language and Cognition.

Exploring the Eyes from a Scientific Perspective

The movement of human eyes mirrors the cognitive processes occurring in the brain. Today, neuroscientists can precisely monitor their parameters with millisecond accuracy. Video-oculography holds the key to understanding numerous phenomena related to reading, perception, and language production processes. IQ.HSE interviewed Andriy Myachikov, Leading Research Fellow at the HSE Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience (ICN), about the method of video-oculography, or, in scientific parlance, eye-tracking, and its applications in psycholinguistic research.

Games Facilitate Stroke Patients' Recovery

An international group of scientists including researchers from HSE University has proposed a novel approach to rehabilitating patients with motor disorders. According to the researchers, more effective recovery can be achieved by granting patients the freedom to choose their movements and providing an appropriate system of rewards for engaging in the prescribed exercises. The opinion paper has been published in Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair.

Expedition Uses New Methods in Minority Language Studies

Researchers from HSE University’s Centre for Language and Brain, together with employees of Adyghe State University’s Laboratory of Experimental Linguistics, are conducting an expedition that is unprecedented in Russia: psycholinguistic field research into the Adyghe language and Russian-Adyghe bilingualism in a village in the Republic of Adygea.

Why Understanding of Texts Worsens with Age

Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain, HSE University, have found that to predict semantic relations between words when reading, older adults use their knowledge of the world instead of grammar more often than young adults. Reliance on the meaning of individual words instead of accurate grammar analysis allows for faster information processing, but sometimes causes misinterpretations. The study has been published by the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology.
