XXV Yasin (April) Academic Conference Kicks Off at HSE University
The anniversary 25th Yasin (April) International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development will take place from April 15 to 18. This year, over a thousand applications were submitted to present at the conference, of which the Programme Committee selected 381 of the best research papers in their respective fields.
In 2025, the conference programme is structured around five major academic topics: economics, human capital and society, instrumental methods and models in management and the social sciences, foresight research, and international studies. In total, 19 thematic sections have been formed, each hosting sessions on a range of topics—from theoretical economics to artificial intelligence. Around twenty round tables have been planned and are expected to involve approximately 150 researchers, as well as representatives from government and business.
The conference always evokes great interest among the academic community: this year, 1,086 presentation applications were submitted, with 381 selected by the Programme Committee. Submitted by researchers from both Russian and international institutions, these represent the best scholarly work in their respective areas. Moreover, nearly 500 individuals have registered to attend the conference as audience members.
Prominent Russian and international scholars will also deliver keynote speeches at the 25th Yasin (April) International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development, including Nobel Laureate Eric Maskin and Panos Pardalos, Professor at the University of Florida and HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod.
The conference events will be held in both Russian and English, mostly on-site.

‘It is a great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s 25th Anniversary Yasin Conference. For 20 years, I worked on this annual event as deputy chair of the Programme Committee under the chairmanship of the late Evgeny Yasin. I am now continuing that work, but this year as the chair of the Programme Committee. When I started, it was the fourth or fifth conference, and there were only 195 speakers. Then, the number of speakers rose to over 1,000. Over these years, the conference has truly become one of Russia’s best academic conferences.
This year, we made the decision to concentrate more on the academic component of the conference. Accordingly, we have reduced the number of topics represented at the conference, as well as the number of thematic sections and discussion sessions under each section.
We took a very serious approach to report selection, and, following international standards, we limit the number of reports presented in the sessions by scholars from the same institution. However, we have met our goal of preserving HSE University’s longstanding traditions of rigorous scholarship with a focus on high quality, fundamental research, and interdisciplinary studies.
I am certain that all scholars taking part in this year’s Yasin (April) Conference will enjoy the opportunities to find associates, encounter new ideas, and find inspiration for their future academic endeavours.’

These conclusions were outlined inthe report ‘More Children, More Happiness: The Impact of the Number of Children on Russians’ Assessment of Happiness,’ presented at the XXV Yasin (April) International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development, held on April 15–18 at HSE University. The study was conducted by Elena Churilova, Senior Research Fellow, and Dmitry Jdanov, Chief Research Fellowat HSE International Laboratory for Population and Health.
HSE Expands Cooperation with Gulf Countries
HSE University and the Centre for International Policy Research (Qatar) have agreed to collaborate in the field of social sciences, with plans for joint research, academic exchanges, and regular expert engagement. The agreement was signed during the roundtable ‘State Capacity and State Resilience in the Global South,’ held as part of the 25th Yasin (April) International Academic Conference at HSE University.

HSE University Announces Call for Proposals to Attend Anniversary Yasin Conference

Academic Council: HSE University’s Contribution to Achieving National Goals and Development Priorities to Increase
HSE University’s Development Programme until 2030 will be improved in order to increase the university’s contribution to achieving national goals and implementing the priorities of the country’s scientific and technological development. This decision was made by the university’s Academic Council on April 26. The meeting also addressed the principles for the development of HSE University’s external communications, one of which is the creation of a high-quality information field around the university.
Keeping Up with the Neighbours: Envy as a Driver of Economic Growth
Classical economic theory assumes that economic agents are entirely self-interested and rational in their pursuit of material well-being, and that they are not affected by external factors. As a result, externalities are not considered in any way when constructing economic models. Nevertheless, some sociologists argue for a revision of modern economic theory to incorporate the ethical dimensions of economic agents' behaviour. Kirill Borissov, Professor of the Faculty of Economics at the European University in St Petersburg, spoke at the XXIV Yasin (April) International Academic Conference and shared his observations from creating his own economic model incorporating the factor of envy.
Structural Transformation and Drivers of Sustainable Growth in Russian Economy Discussed at HSE University
The Russian economy has demonstrated high resilience to unprecedented external pressure and has managed to largely adapt to new conditions. As early as this year, it can go from recession to growth. The issue of where to find drivers and resources for this was discussed at a plenary session titled ‘Russian Economy under Sanctions: From Adaptation to Sustainable Growth’ at the XXIV Yasin (April) International Academic Conference held at HSE University as part of the Decade of Science and Technology. Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Maksim Reshetnikov took part in the discussion.
